Most of the US’ energy sources are purchased from outside its borders. Uranium supplies for example are almost entirely imported (90%). This adds a greater cost to the final energy price and is not a desirable position to be in politically. Fortunately however, the US has enviable supplies of thorium which could make it energy independent for many thousands of years.
It is for reasons such as this, that Senators Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) and Harry Reid (D-Nev.) have introduced the “Thorium Energy Security Act of 2010”, in order to accelerate the arrival of thorium energy production.
This legislation establishes regulatory and development programs to facilitate the introduction of thorium-based nuclear fuel.
Furthermore, Robert Hargraves, co-founder of Coalition for Energy Solutions, and instructor at Dartmouth ILEAD, has proposed six amendments upon the act, including (in bold):

“an advanced thorium fuel cycle to generate nuclear energy— ...would produce power less expensively than from burning fossil fuels”
Robert Hargraves is an advocate of liquid fluoride thorium reactors in particular, and in 2009 gave a Google Tech Talk presentation on thorium energy.
