Yesterday marked the 77 year anniversary of January 26, 1939, when during the Fifth Washington Conference on Theoretical Physics at the George Washington University, Nobel Laureate Niels Bohr publicly announced the splitting of the uranium atom. The resulting “fission,” with its release of two hundred million electron volts of energy, heralded the beginning of the atomic age. Indonesia has signed a memorandum of understanding with ThorConto develop thorium molten salt reactors. The resulting Indonesia Thorium Consortium has three partners from the Indonesian side.

Thorium Molten Salt Reactors in Dutch Television

Last week, at an event at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TerraPower revealed officially, that it is seriously looking into another advanced nuclear reactor concept: the molten salt reactor. The first hints were given already in 2013. But now ‘The molten chloride reactor has bubbled up to the point where we’ve gotten more serious about it’, sums Jeff Latkowski, TerraPower’s director of innovation.
