DARPA has a request for information on "Deployable Reactor Technologies for Generating Power and Logistic Fuels" for which they specify the requirement of a negative temperature coefficient.
The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) has a request for information on "Deployable Reactor Technologies for Generating Power and Logistic Fuels".
Pentagon scientists say they would like to receive proposals for reactors to be used in forward land based and maritime military operations. Preferred reactor designs would allow for several years of operation without refueling. They would like to see porta-reactor proposals able to carry a 5 to 10 megawatt electrical load in addition to producing 15,000 gallons of JP-8 or road fuel daily.
Most interestingly, from a molten-salt perspective, is that they also want designs which are inherently safe for which they specify the requirement of a negative temperature coefficient.
The request is motivated by recent advances in high temperature materials science which suggest that an investigation of compact, deployable nuclear reactor technologies may be timely.
IThEO encourage you to contact Dr. Aaron Lazarus, DARPA STO Program Manager at: DARPA-SN-10-37@darpa.mil
