In its recently published energy policy report, the Dutch government acknowledged the need for innovation in molten salt and other generation IV reactors and stated its support to such research. As an example of a potential innovation, the report mentions the use of thorium as fuel. Netherlands thus joins a number of countries where the potential of thorium as part of the future energy mix is recognized on government level... | |
The Dutch energy report, headlined ‘Transition to Sustainability’ discusses the energy future of the Netherlands in the context of the European and global climate agreements and goals for Co2 emissions cuts and limiting global warming. |
Although there are no current plans in the Netherlands to construct new nuclear power plants, the government sees that if new innovative reactors can conform to safety, non-proliferation and decommissioning requirements, new permits can be issued around 2023-2025. As an example of such innovation, the government mentions the use thorium as a fuel in molten salt reactors. The Dutch government acknowledges the favorable characteristics of thorium, including safety, fuel efficiency and reduced waste. In order to advance the further development of such innovations as the MSR that can play a key role in the country’s energy future, the government is giving its support to the research.
