Victoria Ashley, the ADTR™ Project Manager explains: "Aker Solutions is very pleased to win this prestigious award, recognising the ADTR™ as the best process to demonstrate innovation in alternative energy sources. Interest in thorium energy is certainly increasing and the ADTR™ provides the ideal solution for a thorium fuelled power station, helping to achieve the predicted increase in nuclear power to meet growth in energy demand and combat climate change." Aker Solutions has developed the concept design of a 600MWe ADTR™ power station with Nobel Prize winner Professor Carlo Rubbia of CERN. The design is an accelerator driven, thorium fuelled, lead cooled, power producing, fast reactor. System efficiency, one tonne of mined thorium in the ADTR™ will produces as much energy as 3,500,000 tonnes of mined coal. Also, thorium has non-proliferation benefits as it does not require the expensive enrichment process often associated with military use. Gary Mandel, executive vice president of Aker Solutions' Process and Construction business says: "This technology offers the potential to supply small grids from compact 600MW reactors constructed safely underground."
