India, with the help of United States, ventures to build a first of its kind energy generating system, which is expected to be far safer than the nuclear reactors that are currently being used around the world. The development will culminate in the Indian Accelerator Driven System, IADS. This novel reactor will produce green electricity that's carbon-free and therefore environment friendly.
The U.S. collaborator Fermilab, a United States Department of Energy national laboratory, is best known for the world's top of the line particle accelerators - machines that send fundamental particles at the speed of light in a controlled fashion. Dr Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India called this a mega science project, a "necessity" for humankind. |
India now has three different Thorium reactors under development: AHWR, IMSBR and IADS.
The Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) design is completed and it is awaiting construction. The Indian Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (IMSBR) is under development. And now the development of the Indian Accelerator Driven System (IADS) has been initiated. Considering the burdening energy needs of India and the amount of indigenous energy the country has available in Thorium, the day it has a scalable Thorium Energy system in place could indeed broadly better Indian living standards and propel the country far into the future. |
