The Reason for this Ride
Issue: Energy
Nothing affects well-being and planetary health as our choice to power our societies. 75% of global total energy is still fossil after decades of trying to effect necessary change. Why is this? |
Solution: Thorium
There is an energy source a million times more compact than fossil fuel. A lifetime supply for one person fits into the palm of your hand… and it is everywhere! |
Challenge: Awareness
I want to bring awareness by cycling 2000 km through Europe on a symbolic ride that acknowledges Oil’s contribution and recognizes that Thorium Energy is the best way to power the world. |
'Billy The Biker'
Billy may be 'crazy' about biking, but time in the saddle affords him time to ponder the vexing issues of energy poverty, climate change, mischaracterization of risk, tribal patterns influencing public policy in modern society and pulling the perfect shot of espresso.
1. Billy Gogesch: nearly six decades of turning peanut butter into adventure. Lives in Reno, Nevada
2. Persistence: a near-fatal accident in 2016 severed his nose and inflicted a paralyzing spinal cord injury… but it did not stop him.
3. Interest: making new friends and new experiences with bike adventure, pondering the inseparability of nature and humans.
|
4. Transportation: bicycle powered by muscles fueled by peanut butter and driven by curiosity to see beyond the next rise.
5. Gear: efficiency is the key element to this kind of self supported ride. GPS, Geiger counter, and coffee press.
6. Motivation: he’s not new to connecting the activity he loves with causes dear to him. He has ridden to raise money for childhood cancer research.

The Ride
The ride will begin at the heart of fossil fuel production in Norway and follow a path of history, enlightenment and change to the stage of the Thorium Energy World conference in Brussels, where great minds meet to share ideas and advance the urgently needed successor to fossil fuel as a means to power our societies without degrading our environment.
The ride will celebrate the beauty of the planet, its life, and the amazing ability of humans to adapt to their challenges. However messy that process may seem in progress, we seem to emerge ready for our next challenge… just like Billy after his crash.

Along the way we will visit potential Thorium mines, startups, gain insight on the relationship between risk aversion and inaction, get to know Berzelius (who discovered Thorium) and much more. Here are some of the highlights:
